Electricity costs to rise slightly in October, major review due in 2026

ACCRA – Ghanaians will pay slightly more for electricity from 1 October, as the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced a 1.14 percent adjustment in tariffs.

Eric Obutey, Head of Research and Corporate Affairs at PURC, explained on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (24 September) that the increase is part of the commission’s quarterly review mechanism and reflects movements in inflation and exchange rates.

“This is a minor adjustment. It has nothing to do with the major proposals that utilities have submitted, which are still under review. A major tariff adjustment will take effect from January 2026,” Dr. Obutey clarified.

He added that while water tariffs remain unchanged, electricity saw a marginal upward adjustment because of cost variations, particularly in fuel and exchange rate fluctuations.

Obutey assured that if fuel or natural gas prices fall materially, consumers would benefit from a downward adjustment in tariffs.

The announcement comes amid utilities’ calls for far higher increases—ECG requested 239 percent and the Ghana Water Company 280 percent—to cover operational costs and sustain supply. The PURC is holding nationwide stakeholder engagements before a final decision on those proposals.
