UCC appoints Prof Denis Aheto as interim Vice-Chancellor

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has named Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto as its interim Vice-Chancellor, following a directive from Ghana’s Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

The appointment was confirmed at an emergency meeting of the University’s Governing Council on 24 September. In a statement signed by the Registrar, Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye, the Council said it was acting in line with instructions from the Commission.

Prof Aheto, who is currently Pro Vice-Chancellor, takes over from Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong. GTEC ordered Prof Boampong to vacate his post after ruling that his continued stay in office breached the constitutional retirement age for public officers.

The Commission said Prof Boampong had passed the mandatory retirement age of 60, citing Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution. It also referred to the University of Cape Coast Act (PNDCL 278) and the institution’s statutes, which limit the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure.

The matter is before the Cape Coast High Court, and GTEC has instructed that no substantive appointment should be made until the case is resolved.

UCC’s Governing Council has sought to reassure staff and students that the university’s academic and administrative work remains unaffected by the leadership transition.

Prof Aheto will oversee the university in an acting capacity until a final decision is reached.
