Nearly 600,000 first-year students are beginning their Free Senior High School education across Ghana as the 2025–2026 academic year officially starts.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) says school activities begin today, Monday, October 20, after students started reporting to their assigned schools over the weekend. The placement list was released earlier, allowing students to register and settle into their new campuses.
This year’s intake marks one of the largest since the introduction of the Free Senior High School policy, which continues to widen access to secondary education nationwide.
The Ministry of Education has expressed optimism about the new academic year, urging students to take advantage of the opportunities provided through the Free SHS programme.
Officials say the government remains committed to improving facilities and resources to accommodate the growing number of students benefiting from the policy.
