The High Court in Accra on Tuesday issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, after he failed to appear in court without permission.
The warrant was issued shortly after the case was called around 9:40 a.m. on October 28. Neither Wontumi nor his lawyers were present, and no explanation was given for their absence. The prosecution, led by Chief State Attorney Stella Ohene Appiah, was in attendance.
Presiding judge Justice Audrey Kocuvi Tay expressed disappointment at the accused person’s failure to appear, noting that the court had received “no excuse of any sort.” She reminded the court that the day’s session was meant for the filing of disclosures and case management.
Minutes after the warrant was issued, Chairman Wontumi and his legal team arrived in court.
Wontumi is standing trial with Kwame Antwi, a director of Akonta Mining Limited, and the company itself. They have been charged with assigning mineral rights without lawful approval.
