Minority Leader: no “stealth” third term under our watch

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has warned that his caucus will block any attempt to introduce a third presidential term, accusing the government of undermining Ghana’s constitutional order through judicial manoeuvres and rushed parliamentary processes.

Speaking at the close of Parliament’s third meeting, Afenyo-Markin said what he described as “creative constitutional interpretation” was being explored to extend executive power beyond its lawful limits, a move he said the Minority would resist using legal and parliamentary means.

“There will be no third term by stealth,” he said. “Not on our watch.”

Democracy under threat

He cautioned that Ghana’s democracy was under threat, alleging that court actions and hurried parliamentary decisions were being used to alter the will of voters.

He cited recent legal disputes in the Kpandai and Suhum constituencies as examples of what he described as judicial interference in parliamentary representation.

“Democracy rests on one sacred principle: the people choose their representatives,” Afenyo-Markin said.

“Not judges. Not bureaucrats. Not political schemers working in the shadows.”

The Minority Leader also criticised the frequent use of certificates of urgency to pass legislation, arguing that the practice limits scrutiny, weakens parliamentary oversight and erodes constitutional safeguards.

He warned that continued disregard for due process could further weaken public trust in democratic institutions, urging a return to constitutional discipline and respect for the separation of powers.
