ACCRA – Ghanaian boxing has been struck by tragedy as Ernest Akushey, popularly known as Bahubali, has passed away just days after his last fight, leaving behind a 4-month-old son who will now grow up without a father.
The heartbreaking incident occurred after Bahubali’s bout with Jacob Dickson on September 12 at the Bukom Boxing Arena. The young boxer was stopped in the eighth round, and reports suggest he later suffered internal bleeding. His death was confirmed in the early hours of Tuesday, sending shockwaves across the boxing fraternity.
Acting President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Roger Banor, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, extending condolences to the family and boxing community.
“This very unfortunate incident has taken away a father of a four-month-old baby boy. It is painful that his son will live without him, but as an Authority, we will be there to support him as a father,” he said.
Bahubali’s passing is the second major tragedy in Ghanaian boxing this year, following the death of Gabriel Aluwasegun in April. The GBA has since pledged to strengthen medical care and safety measures for boxers after bouts.
For Bahubali’s family, however, the pain is immeasurable. His baby boy, only four months old, has been robbed of a father’s love and guidance — a reminder of the heavy human cost behind the sport’s fierce battles.
