ACCRA – New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has cautioned party members against making sweeping statements about the party’s record in government, warning that such remarks risk damaging its public image.
Speaking on Atumpan on AsaasePa on Wednesday, the former education minister clarified comments he made following former vice-president Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent apology to NPP delegates.
“For him, it is his own judgment. But for my part, I would have done it differently,” Adutwum said.
“I wouldn’t unleash such a remark on him to say he destroyed the economy and that I didn’t destroy the education sector. Why would I say that? Those are coming from persons with evil minds.”
He stressed that Bawumia had not served as finance minister and should not be solely blamed for economic challenges.
“What I said was that if there were lapses during our tenure, we could just single them out and deal with them. We shouldn’t generalise things so our opponents would weaponise them against us as a campaign message to say that we did nothing while in government,” he explained.
Adutwum also highlighted what he described as major achievements under the NPP in education, including placing second in Africa, but admitted the party had “failed to publicise our successes to the voters.”
