Special Aide to Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Akosua Manu, has strongly criticised recent remarks by New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, describing them as a dangerous threat to Ghana’s democratic stability.
Reacting to Mr. Agyapong’s comments that the NPP’s 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia should have never accepted defeat until the Electoral Commission officially declared the results, Ms. Manu, in a Facebook post on Thursday, October 16, 2025, cautioned that such statements undermine the principles of peace and due process that underpin Ghana’s elections.
“Publicly admitting a willingness to let the country burn before conceding is the biggest threat to our democracy,” she wrote.
Her comments come in response to Mr. Agyapong’s statement during his campaign tour of the Savannah Region, where he vowed never to concede defeat in any election until the EC officially declares the final results.
However, the former Deputy Director of the National Youth Authority (NYA) was of the view that responsible political leadership demands respect for the electoral process and confidence in the institutions mandated to oversee it, stressing that inflammatory rhetoric, especially from senior political figures, could erode public trust and incite unnecessary tension during elections.
Ms. Manu further urged all political actors to exercise restraint and demonstrate maturity in their public utterances as the NPP prepares for its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.
