The Constituency Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Atwima Nwabiagya North Constituency, Ralph Osei Wusu, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of political intolerance, contrasting it with what he described as the NPP’s inclusive and tolerant approach to governance.
Speaking in an interview, Mr Osei Wusu said political participation under the NPP administration was open to all, regardless of party affiliation, adding that the party upheld freedom of expression and treated political opponents as partners in national development.
He alleged that following the NDC’s assumption of power, he was pressured to resign from his position or face a transfer to a location where he would have limited access to radio platforms. According to him, such actions were never taken against NDC members during the NPP’s tenure in government.
Mr Osei Wusu further criticised what he described as the NDC government’s handling of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, arguing that the treatment was unfair and detrimental to Ghana’s democratic practice.
He stressed that active political participation is vital to the growth of democracy and warned that actions perceived as targeting political opponents could undermine democratic development.
According to him, the actions taken against Chairman Wontumi negatively affected the pace of the NPP’s campaign activities in the Ashanti Region, noting that the party’s campaign momentum slowed around June 2024 but was later revived following Chairman Wontumi’s full involvement.
Mr Osei Wusu revealed that about seven months ago, Chairman Wontumi embarked on a regional tour which, he said, revitalised party activities and eventually evolved into what is now known as the “Bawumia Tour.”
He expressed strong confidence in Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, stating his belief that Dr Bawumia will emerge victorious in the NPP’s internal contest. He urged party delegates to rally behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
