President John Dramani Mahama has declared three days of national mourning beginning today, Thursday, August 7, in honour of the eight individuals who perished in a tragic military helicopter crash on Wednesday. The crash, which occurred under yet-undisclosed circumstances, claimed the lives of eight military personnel who were reportedly on an official assignment when the incident happened. Authorities are still working to determine the cause of the accident, and a full investigation has been launched by the Ghana Armed Forces in collaboration with relevant aviation and security agencies.

In a solemn address to the nation late Wednesday evening, President Mahama expressed his deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the fallen as “patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our beloved nation.””I have declared a period of national mourning to begin on Thursday, August 7, and last for three days, during which all national flags will fly at half-mast across the country,” the President announced. “This is a time for unity, reflection, and support for the families who have lost their loved ones in this tragic event.”The identities of the victims have not yet been officially released, pending notification of their families.

However, Defence Ministry sources confirmed that all eight individuals were members of the Ghana Armed Forces. Ghanaians have taken to social media and community forums to express their grief and solidarity, with many praising the bravery and dedication of the fallen officers. Churches, mosques, and traditional leaders across the country have also called for prayers and remembrance during the mourning period. The President has assured the public that the government will provide full support to the families of the victims, including military honours, counselling services, and appropriate compensation.

Further details, including funeral arrangements and the preliminary findings of the crash investigation, are expected to be made public in the coming days.As the nation enters this period of mourning, citizens are urged to observe the solemnity of the occasion and honour the memory of the eight souls lost in what is being described as one of the military’s darkest days in recent history.
