Minority backs decentralisation of parliament

The Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has declared his support for a decentralised parliamentary system to bridge the gap between the public and government.

The opposition argues that the current setup distances citizens from governance and that decentralising parliament would ensure true accountability and inclusivity.

Speaking at the Speaker’s Breakfast Forum, Mr Afenyo-Markin said a decentralised system “strengthens oversight by enabling committees to engage directly with projects and stakeholders at the local level. It also enhances non-partisan engagement.”

He added that “decentralisation requires professional staffing, digital innovation, civic education and sustained financial commitment. Ghana possesses the constitutional framework necessary for such reform.”

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, called for reform within Ghana’s legislative arm last year, emphasising the need to bring parliament closer to the people. He organised a forum under the theme “Parliamentary Decentralisation: Taking Parliament Closer to the People,” amid the ongoing constitutional review process in Ghana.
