NPP former chairman freed on bail following hospitalisation

The Koforidua High Court has granted bail to former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, in the sum of GHC800,000 with two sureties.

The court directed that both sureties must be residents in Accra and possess valid Ghana Cards.

The bail decision follows a brief but tense period in custody during which Mr Blay reportedly suffered a health scare. He was rushed to an undisclosed medical facility on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, after his blood pressure rose to dangerously high levels.

An aide attributed the incident to the stress of his arrest and detention.

Blay had earlier been remanded by the Akropong Circuit Court in connection with an alleged demolition dispute at Kitase.

His arrest came after police executed a bench warrant in Accra on March 16, 2026. According to authorities, the warrant was issued in April 2025 after he allegedly failed to honour multiple invitations to assist with investigations and did not appear for arraignment.

Allegations and Defence

The case centres on a parcel of land at Kitase, which Blay reportedly acquired in 1994. Prosecutors allege that he ordered the demolition of a house under construction on the disputed land.

However, his legal team has strongly denied the claims, insisting that no building was demolished. They argue that in January 2026, he only directed the clearing of a vacant plot to prevent it from becoming a breeding ground for reptiles.

The defence further maintains that the dispute is civil rather than criminal. They note that although the complainant previously secured a favourable ruling at the High Court in Koforidua, that decision is currently under appeal.

They also claim attempts to serve the complainant with court documents related to the appeal have been unsuccessful.

Blay is expected to reappear before the Akropong Circuit Court on April 9, 2026, as investigations into the matter continue.
