NDC officials threaten us over cocoa farmers’ engagement – Minority Chief Whip alleges

The Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri and Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has alleged that some high-ranking officials within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been sending him threatening messages.

He claims the messages are intended to intimidate NPP MPs engaging with cocoa farmers, aiming to discourage them from continuing their interactions.

Speaking at Manso Odumase in the Manso Edubia district on the third day of the Minority Caucus’ tour of cocoa-growing communities in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh said:

“When we were on our way here for the third day of our interactions with you, the farmers, members of the NDC have been sending messages threatening to kill us if we do not cease our engagement with you.”

He referred to an incident at Bonkrom on the second day of the tour, where some NDC members allegedly attempted to instigate chaos during the caucus’ engagement with cocoa farmers in the Ahafo Ano North district. According to him, certain NDC leaders had scheduled a separate meeting with farmers at the same venue and time, which nearly resulted in a clash.

A significant security presence was deployed at Bonkrom to prevent disruptions, he noted.

Despite the threats, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh emphasized that the Minority Caucus remains undeterred:

“We are undeterred by the threats and will persist in engaging with the cocoa farmers, as they are the ones who can provide firsthand information about the impact of the cocoa price reduction.”

He further urged the government to consider selling three of the four helicopters it has acquired and use the funds to settle payments owed to cocoa farmers, emphasizing that farmers are the backbone of the country’s economy and should not struggle while officials enjoy luxuries.

The Minority Caucus delegation has so far visited Atwima Mponua, Ano South West, Ahafo Ano South East, Ahafo Ano North, Bosome Freho, Asante Akyem North, Asante Akyem South, Asante Akyem Central, and Manso Edubia constituencies, as part of their tour of 20 cocoa-growing districts.
