Sulemana Abdul-Samed, popularly known as Awuche and widely recognized as Ghana’s tallest man, has passed away at the age of 33 following health complications linked to gigantism.

Family sources confirmed that he died in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital in the Northern Region, where he was undergoing specialized medical treatment after his condition deteriorated.

Awuche, a native of Gambaga in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region, stood at 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 meters) and gained international attention in 2022 when local health reports highlighted his rapid growth and living conditions.

He was diagnosed with acromegaly, a rare endocrine disorder caused by an excess of growth hormone in the body, which led to severe physical challenges, including back pain, spinal curvature, and mobility constraints in his final years.

Before being transferred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for advanced care, Awuche received treatment at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu as local advocacy groups raised funds to support his medical needs.

Family members confirmed that preparations are currently underway in Tamale to bury Awuche in accordance with Islamic customs and traditions.
