CAF CL: Why Did Ghana’s GoldStars Sack Frimpong Manso?

Defending champions of the Ghana Premier League, Bibiani GoldStars, have surprisingly parted ways with their head coach Frimpong Manso, just months after he guided them to their historic first league crown.

The decision comes in the wake of GoldStars’ 2-0 home defeat to Algerian giants JS Kabylie in the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round first leg on Sunday, September 21. The result leaves the Miners with a mountain to climb in the return fixture in Algiers.

Manso, a former Asante Kotoko defender, took charge of GoldStars in 2023 after leaving Bofoakwa Tano. Within one season, he transformed the Western North club into league champions in 2024/25, also winning the GHALCA Top 4 Cup. His achievements cemented him as one of the league’s brightest tacticians.

Despite his success, GoldStars’ management believed that their continental ambitions required a new technical approach. Sources suggest that the poor start to Africa’s second-tier competition convinced the leadership that a change was necessary to maintain momentum both locally and internationally.

Former Black Stars assistant coach Maxwell Konadu is set to take over as the new head coach. At 52, Konadu brings vast experience, having managed Asante Kotoko, Legon Cities, Nsoatreman FC, and the Black Stars B, with whom he won the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations.

His tactical knowledge and leadership are expected to restore stability and confidence as GoldStars aim to overturn their deficit against Kabylie and defend their Premier League crown.

Manso’s exit marks the end of a successful chapter, but also the beginning of a new era under Konadu. Fans will be watching closely to see if the new appointment can inspire another historic run.
