Kapito slams minister’s “showboating” over DSTV discounts

ACCRA – The Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency, Kofi Kapito, has described the Communications Minister’s announcement of discounts on DSTV services as “a cosmetic remedy” that fails to address consumer concerns.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (30 September), Kapito accused the minister of making populist promises and delivering little.

“The minister is a disappointment, period. He promised to give us eggs, he ended up giving us gravels,” Kapito said.

He criticised the so-called unprecedented discounts, arguing they amounted to “buy one, get one free” promotions that DSTV already rolls out on its own.

“Does it make it cheaper? No. Even the so-called promotions are very dangerous, because they last for only three months. It’s cosmetic and doesn’t bring out the issues,” he said.

Kapito said consumers’ real power lay in boycotting DSTV if unhappy with pricing.

“In commerce, it’s the buyer and seller. If consumers switch off their decoders, DSTV will sit up,” he argued.

He further faulted the minister for excluding key stakeholders such as his agency from negotiations.

“In Ghana, stakeholders always mean government and government. We at the Consumer Protection Agency weren’t even invited. The minister is showboating, and Ghanaians deserve better,” Kapito said.
