Otto Addo Needs Coaching Support, Black Stars Players Must Step Up-Sam Johnson

Former Black Stars defender Sam Johnson has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to provide additional technical support for Coach Otto Addo, as the national team prepares for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking in an interview with Gideon Okyere Anim, also known as Gatusso, on Original TV, Johnson emphasized that while Coach Addo deserves some scrutiny, the blame for poor performances cannot rest on him alone.

“Let’s not put all the blame on Coach Otto Addo. The players need to step up their game,” he said.

Johnson, who was part of the national team in the late 1990s and early 2000s, reflected on the higher standards set during his time, citing the late Hon. E.T. Mensah, then Minister of Sports, who, according to him, “wouldn’t tolerate losses.”

His comments come ahead of Ghana’s crucial World Cup qualifying matches against the Central African Republic and Comoros.

Johnson believes that with better technical support and more responsibility taken by the players, the Black Stars can improve and secure qualification.

“The coach needs help, but the players must also deliver on the pitch. It’s a team effort,” he added.
