GFA President Kurt Okraku Sets Clear Criteria for 2026 World Cup Selection

Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has laid down a firm policy for player selection ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

In an exclusive interview with 3Sports, Okraku stated that only players who have consistently demonstrated genuine commitment and respect for the Black Stars will be considered for the national team.

With Ghana’s qualification for the prestigious tournament confirmed, the GFA has been inundated with interest from several foreign-born players eager to join the ranks of the Black Stars. However, Okraku made it clear that the door would not be open to just any player — especially those who have shown a lack of commitment in the past.

“We are looking for players who are committed to the Ghanaian flag, to the ideals of the Black Stars, and who truly feel a sense of responsibility to represent Ghana,” Okraku explained. “There must be a valid reason why a player is included in the squad. I am not interested in players who only want to wear the jersey when it’s convenient for them. The team will be built on dedication, passion, and respect for the nation.”

Okraku’s stance comes amidst reports of foreign-born players expressing interest in playing for Ghana at the World Cup. While the GFA President did not close the door on these players, he emphasized that past actions will be heavily considered.

“If you’ve declined an invitation in the past or shown a lack of respect for Ghana’s jersey, don’t expect to be called up for the 2026 World Cup,” Okraku declared. “This is about national pride, discipline, and a long-term commitment to our cause. If you’ve turned us down before, you will not be part of the team moving forward.”
