Mohammed Kudus’ Goal Secures Ghana’s 2026 World Cup Berth with 1-0 Win Over Comoros

Ghana’s Black Stars clinched qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Comoros on Sunday, October 12, at the Accra Sports Stadium, propelled by a second-half strike from Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mohammed Kudus. The win secured Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance, topping Group I with 25 points and joining Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia as African qualifiers for the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Kudus, 25, broke a three-game international goal drought by scoring in the 47th minute, capitalizing on a precise low cross from captain Thomas Partey after a goalmouth scramble. The goal sparked celebrations among the 40,000-strong home crowd, with fans chanting “USA” as Ghana sealed their spot in the expanded 48-nation tournament. The Black Stars dominated first-half possession but struggled against Comoros’ compact defense, managing only three shots on goal before the breakthrough.

The victory was particularly significant given Comoros’ past upsets over Ghana, including a shock win at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations and a 1-0 defeat in the second round of World Cup qualifying two years ago. Coach Otto Addo’s tactical adjustments paid off, with a back-three of Alexander Djiku, Mohammed Salisu, and Jonas Adjetey, alongside wingers Alidu Seidu and Ebenezer Annan, ensuring defensive solidity. Substitutions of Joseph Paintsil and Caleb Yirenkyi helped maintain control as Comoros pressed late.

Ghana’s campaign, which saw them finish six points ahead of Madagascar and seven ahead of Mali, vindicated Addo’s tenure despite earlier criticism following a poor 2025 AFCON qualifying run. The Black Stars’ best World Cup performance remains their 2010 quarter-final appearance in South Africa, where they lost to Uruguay on penalties. With Kudus’ growing influence and a cohesive squad, hopes are high for a deeper run in 2026.

The result capped an undefeated final phase of qualifiers, reinforcing Ghana’s status as a Sub-Saharan African football powerhouse. The team will learn their group-stage opponents at the World Cup draw in December, as they aim to surpass their 2022 group-stage exit in Qatar.
