2026 WC: Reconsider decision on Kim Lars Björkegren – Ignatius Osei-Fosu urges GFA

Assistant coach of the Sudan national football team, Ignatius Osei-Fosu, has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to reconsider its decision to add Kim Lars Björkegren to the technical team of the Ghana national football team ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament in June.

Osei-Fosu believes the move could disrupt the preparation of Ghana’s women’s national team, the Ghana women’s national football team, ahead of the rescheduled Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will now be played in July.

The debate follows the GFA’s decision to include Björkegren—who currently manages the Black Queens—in the Black Stars’ technical setup for the global tournament, a move that has raised concerns about possible scheduling and preparation conflicts ahead of WAFCON.

Speaking to Luv FM, Osei-Fosu stressed that the Black Queens’ campaign to qualify for the next global tournament should be treated with utmost importance.

“They have to change because during the World Cup, the Black Queens must be preparing,” Osei-Fosu said.

Ignatius Osei-Fosu

“I’m not calling for a change for the sake of it. They have to, unless they are throwing one of the tournaments under the bus. It’s fundamental because Ghana wants to qualify for the Women’s World Cup.”

He insisted his stance stems from his long-standing support for the women’s national team.

“Anybody who has followed me knows that I’m the number one supporter of the Black Queens. The people managing the team cannot play with that tournament,” he stated.

Osei-Fosu also warned that the WAFCON tournament carries significant stakes for Ghana’s women’s team.

“This tournament we are going to play is a qualifier for the World Cup in Brazil. As I’m sitting here, nobody should play with it,” he added.

He further argued that if Ghana expects the Black Stars to make a deep run at the World Cup, the same level of seriousness must be given to the Black Queens as they pursue qualification for the next global showpiece.
