Ghanaians slam Kennedy Agyapong for his “irresponsible” I’ll not have conceded early comment.

NPP flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong , has come under fire for seeking to attack former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for his early concession of the 2024 election.

Bawumia, who was the NPP’s candidate, made an early concession when the NPP’s internal collation network showed President Mahama had won, and his early concession, in the midst of rising tension, was widely applauded in Ghana and abroad.

However, Kennedy Agyapong , who is seeking to be the NPP’s candidate for the 2028 election, has said that he would not have conceded early if he were the candidate.

“If I were the 2024 presidential candidate, I would never have conceded defeat until the very last ballot in the very last constituency was counted,” Kennedy Agyapong said during his campaign tour of the Savannah Region.

Many Ghanaians on social media have, however, taken a dim view of Kennedy Agyapong ‘s statement and slammed him for exhibiting an attitude which does not consider the ultimate peace and tranquillity of the nation.

“All parties collate results internally, so when it has become so obvious that you have lost and tension is rising in the country, the most responsible thing to do is to gracefully concede, and that’s what Bawumia did. Kennedy’s comment is dangerous to our democracy,” said one user on social media.

A number of other users expressed disappointment in the NPP flagbearer hopeful, adding that his posture reflects someone who can spark violence.

“This guy can cause conflict in the world… imagine Kennedy Agyapong as a president,” wrote another.

Another, while hitting out at Kennedy Agyapong , noted that when all data points to a defeat, the good thing for a leader to do in a 21st-century democracy is to concede to avoid crisis.

“If your collation centre results come out that you’ve lost, you won’t accept defeat? And what will happen that will make you win? Kasa basaaaa saaaaa (irresponsible comments).”

“Conceding defeat doesn’t signify weakness; rather, it’s a bold move that promotes peace and stability. We must prioritise our country’s tranquillity over personal interests.”

“Examples from neighbouring countries like Liberia and Nigeria demonstrate that concession can prevent chaos. Let’s cherish our hard-earned peace and support a smooth transition.”
