The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has criticised Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine for what he describes as selective accountability in handling corruption-related cases.
In an exclusive interview with Citi News’ Jude Duncan, the lawmaker stressed that public office holders must be prepared to submit to full legal scrutiny, irrespective of political affiliation.
According to Mr. Baffour Awuah, the Attorney-General began to falter on the recovering loots agenda when he entered a nolle prosequi to discontinue cases involving members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who were already standing trial before the change of government.
“If you decide to let one go and you prosecute the other simply because the person you let go belongs to the same political party, then of course from that very day you had failed,” he said.
He added that if the reasons for discontinuing those cases were legitimate, the matters should have been allowed to run their full course in court.
The MP warned that selective prosecution erodes public confidence in the justice system, insisting that the use of public funds must be scrutinised without political bias.
“I think that the Attorney General started failing the very day he filed the nolle prosequi in respect of members of the NDC who were standing trial prior to the government taking office. Because there is no discrimination in terms of public funds. He started failing on ORAL (Operation Recover All Loots) because ORAL forms part of the NDC’s reset agenda. If you are going to fight corruption then it should be a more comprehensive fight,” he stated.
Mr. Baffour Awuah emphasised that consistent accountability is crucial to uphold the integrity of Ghana’s democratic and legal institutions.
