Black Queens Secure Crucial Win Over Egypt In 2026 WAFCON Qualification Race

Ghana’s Black Queens are on the brink of securing a spot in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a stunning 3-0 victory over Egypt in the first leg of their second-round qualifier at Ismailia Stadium on Thursday.

The impressive win places the Black Queens in a commanding position heading into the return leg on Tuesday, October 28, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The aggregate winner will secure qualification for the prestigious continental tournament, which will take place in Morocco next year. Ghana, who finished third in the previous edition of WAFCON, are now just one step away from continuing their impressive legacy.

The game began with Egypt pressing high and creating a few early chances, but Ghana’s defense, led by goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan, remained unshaken. As the match progressed, the Black Queens began to assert control, with the midfield duo of Jennifer Cudjoe and Grace Asantewaa orchestrating play and providing stability to the team.

It was just before halftime when Ghana broke the deadlock. Cudjoe, in a moment of brilliance, threaded a perfect pass through Egypt’s defense to find Doris Boaduwaa. The striker made no mistake, finishing neatly from close range to put Ghana 1-0 up.

After the break, the Black Queens continued to dominate proceedings. Ghana’s superiority was further cemented when Egypt’s midfielder was sent off for a reckless challenge on Asantewaa. With the numerical advantage, Ghana quickly seized control, creating several more opportunities.

Josephine Bonsu almost doubled Ghana’s lead with a brilliant free-kick that struck the post. But the second goal came shortly after, with substitute Mary Amponsah finding the back of the net in the 72nd minute. Amponsah finished with composure after Princess Marfo’s header was saved, making it 2-0 to the Black Queens.

The 3-0 scoreline puts the Black Queens in a commanding position heading into next week’s decisive clash in Accra, where they’ll look to finish the job and secure their place in next year’s WAFCON in Morocco.
