West African leaders have declared a regional state of emergency after a string of coups and attempted military uprisings rattled several countries in recent months.
The decision was announced on Tuesday by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray during the 55th session of the bloc’s Mediation and Security Council in Abuja.
Touray told ministers that the unrest sweeping parts of the region has become a serious threat to its stability.
He said the turbulence highlights an urgent need for countries to take a hard look at the future of democratic rule and to reinforce security systems that can withstand political shocks.
The declaration comes at a time when West Africa is struggling to contain rising political tension and declining public trust in civilian governments.
With democracy under pressure on multiple fronts, ECOWAS says it hopes the emergency measures will help member states respond more quickly to crises and prevent further disruptions.
