C/R: Pupils carry plastic chairs, kitchen stools to school as desks run out

CENTRAL REGION – Pupils at Enyan Obontser D/A Basic School in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District of the Central Region say they are struggling to learn because of a shortage of desks, forcing them to bring kitchen stools and plastic chairs from home.

Some of the makeshift seats are broken, making it difficult for pupils to sit comfortably or concentrate during lessons. The situation has left many parents and teachers worried about its effect on education in the community.

“We always carry kitchen stools and plastic chairs to school for sitting,” one pupil lamented, describing the daily challenge.

The pupils are appealing to the government, the District Chief Executive, and traditional leaders to provide desks for the school, which serves children from several neighbouring communities.

The Senahen of Enyan Denkyira Traditional Area, Osaade3yo Ayeboafo Etuaful, also expressed concern. In an interview with GHOne News, he urged parents to play a greater role in their children’s education by supplying basic learning materials. As part of his support, he donated 2,000 exercise books to the school and called on the wider community to help address the pressing needs of the pupils.

Assistant headteacher Mr. Obed Donkor thanked the chief for his gesture but stressed that more support is urgently required. “We still need desks and other educational materials to improve teaching and learning,” he said.

For now, the children of Enyan Obontser D/A Basic School continue to balance their lessons on stools and plastic chairs, waiting for the day when proper desks arrive.
