Minority Warns Ghana’s Security Has Worsened Under Mahama as Crime Surge Fuels Public Fear

The Minority in Parliament has warned that Ghana’s security situation has deteriorated sharply under President John Dramani Mahama, saying the surge in crime has left many citizens living in fear.

Addressing the media on Thursday, January 8, during a review of the President’s first year in office, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei attributed the worsening insecurity to what she described as the politicisation of the police service and the neglect of the wider security sector.

She noted that incidents of armed robbery and other violent crimes have increased over the past year, undermining public confidence and shattering the sense of safety Ghanaians once enjoyed.

“Ghanaians now sleep with one eye open. The security situation has deteriorated, turning our once peaceful nation into one gripped by fear and uncertainty,” she stated.

According to Madam Appiagyei, a year into President Mahama’s renewed mandate, the country is facing deepening security challenges, pointing to figures acknowledged by the Minister for the Interior.

She revealed that as of July 2025, Ghana had recorded approximately 628 armed robbery cases and 314 murders involving illicit firearms within just six months.

“Ghanaians no longer feel safe in their own homes. The responsibility to protect lives and property has weakened due to politicised policing and the neglect of our security services,” she added.
