Senior Lecturer at the Kumasi Technical University, Dr. Samuel Afriyie, has alleged that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) cannot put an end to illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, because some of its members are actively involved in the practice.
Speaking in an interview on Wontumi TV’s Morning Show, Dr. Afriyie claimed that galamsey operations continue to thrive under the NDC because, according to him, party officials and sympathizers benefit directly from the illegal activity.
He alleged that “the NDC cannot stop galamsey because they are behind it and even practice it themselves.” Dr. Afriyie further asserted that proceeds from galamsey are used by the NDC to fund their political activities and support their members financially.
Dr. Afriyie also touched on the state of the economy, stating that Ghana’s economic growth has been negatively affected due to what he described as “mismanagement and poor economic planning” under the NDC administration.
He explained that despite the government investing billions of dollars into the economy, the benefits have not translated into improved living conditions for ordinary citizens, adding that “demand and supply principles alone cannot solve the current economic challenges.”
According to him, the difficult economic situation has also impacted the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy. He claimed that under the NDC government, the policy is no longer fully free, as students now have to purchase their own textbooks and often experience long delays in receiving school uniforms.
Dr. Afriyie cautioned that “the economy will collapse if the NDC fails to support it within the next three to four years.”
