RECKLESS BIGOTRY RELOADED AND NEEDLESSLY PRESSING THE PANIC BUTTON : BY: Avoka Alberta Wuntima

In the last two days, a disturbing video of Dr. Bryan Acheampong has gone viral, prompting many comments from party people. As expected, the reckless comments by the flag bearer hopeful also gave a fine opportunity to the ruling NDC to stock their armoury, waiting to unleash on the NPP at the right time.

Before commenting on the recklessness of some of the flag bearers I will like to touch on the needless panic that seems to have also been triggered by the bigots in the party. Question one: what is so unusual about the 2024 election outcome that a small group of opportunists think the party is all but dead? My answer is, there is nothing extraordinary about the outcome. At the very minimum, the outcome followed a familiar pattern, whereby incumbent parties tend to lose after every 8-year cycle.

Even the pseudo military NDC suffered this right after the tenure of the charismatic JJ Rawlings. Question Two: was the performance of the party the worst? Again, my answer is that those pushing this narrative are either lazy or naive.

The facts and data say otherwise for any first time NPP flagbearer. In the case of 2024, and given all that transpired globally, the outcome would have been worst, but for the personal integrity of His Excellency, Dr. Mahamud Bawumia.

We should not needlessly press the panic button unless we are driven by other ulterior motives. There is absolutely no need. When sitting President Mahama lost the 2016 election by a wide margin, the NDC organized and came back. In my books, that defeat remains the biggest electoral defeat in our history, if you know what a sitting president means.

The NDC’s response was to ask genuine questions instead of hanging it on the Northerner Mahama. They asked why many intellectuals and CSOs were against the NDC; they also asked why the NPP is making much inroads in Northern Ghana; they asked many more questions. The rest, they say, is history.

In the case of our party, our task is even simple. The NDC will be fielding a new candidate. The NPP is likely going to  settle on DMB, who is the most marketed and cobweb-free of all aspirants. We should be asking critical questions  such as: why is the NPP performing poorly in its traditionally acclaimed strongholds, mainly Akan regions?.

This is a party that spent years fighting tags bothering on bigotry. It is shameful that we are lending credence to these accusations. In any case, in the unlikely event that any other person other than DMB emerges winner of the Presidential primaries, will that person expect people he has belittled, profiled and ridiculed to remain dumb and do ‘follow follow’?

My appeal to all aspirants is that, they should put what they have on the table and let the delegates decide. Nobody is going to be annointed a flagbearer because you were born a Kofi, Mahamudu or Agyepong. Nobody will be on the ballot box because you were the most vitriolic and abusive of other groups.

We either rise together or forever hold on to our empty pride framed solely on where one is coming from. In that case, we sink together. This is not a difficult ask.

I shall be back.
