US Reverses Visa Restrictions on Ghana

WASHINGTON, USA – Ghanaians travelling to the United States can now benefit from five-year multiple entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges following the reversal of visa restrictions earlier imposed on the country.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who disclosed the development in a Facebook post on Friday, September 26, 2025, described it as a “big win for Ghana.”

“This good news was directly communicated to me by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker at a bilateral meeting earlier today, in the margins of the UN General Assembly,” Okudzeto Ablakwa wrote.

According to him, the outcome is the result of “months of high-level diplomatic negotiations,” adding that he is “really pleased” with the progress made.

The United States imposed visa restrictions on Ghana and other countries in July this year, limiting them to a maximum of three-month single entry visas.

The Trump Administration said the decision was in response to years of visa overstays, mainly by students.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa noted that the reversal of the restrictions signals improved relations between the two nations.

“It’s good to see healthier and stronger Ghana-USA relations. For God and Country,” he said.
