The Minority Caucus in Parliament is calling for the urgent payment of unpaid tuition and associated fees owed to Ghanaian students studying in the United Kingdom under government scholarships.
According to the caucus, the government has not fulfilled its financial obligations under the scholarship programme administered by the Ghana Scholarship Authority.
Many students now face visa expirations, and efforts to secure graduate visas have been unsuccessful, putting them at risk of deportation.
Speaking at a press conference, the Member of Parliament for Sevelugu, Abdul-Aziz Fatahiya, urged the relevant authorities to act swiftly to resolve the matter.
She emphasized that when Ghana invests in its young people, the nation must fully support them.
“Students on scholarship at Birmingham University in the UK have not had their fees paid. The UK immigration authorities are threatening to deport them. They have been given one week to return home. We urge the Scholarship Secretariat to remit their fees immediately, as the students have been crying out and have even sent petitions to us,” she said.
The Minority warned that failure to act quickly could harm Ghana’s international reputation and undermine confidence in its scholarship programmes.
Currently, 36 Ghanaian PhD candidates are studying in the UK. In November 2025, the students’ president, Prince Komla Bansah, stated that over GH₵5.7 million was urgently needed to settle outstanding tuition for the 2025/2026 academic year.
