‘Woboa’ – Minority slams Mahama over job creation figures

The Minority in Parliament erupted on Friday [February 27, 2026] as President John Dramani Mahama delivered the State of the Nation Address, shouting “woboa” – a local term meaning “you’re lying” – in response to his claims on job creation and poverty reduction.

President Mahama had told Parliament that more than one million Ghanaians secured employment between the first and third quarters of 2025, while nearly 950,000 citizens moved out of multidimensional poverty during the same period.

He attributed this progress to the government’s flagship 24-hour economy programme and highlighted a strong external sector performance, including a $9.1 billion current account surplus – equivalent to 8.1 percent of GDP – driven by robust exports in gold, cocoa, non-traditional products, and remittance inflows.

The Minority’s outburst came as the President presented the statistics drawn from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), suggesting that the figures were exaggerated or unrepresentative of the realities on the ground.

Lawmakers from the Minority faction repeatedly interrupted the speech, insisting that the government’s economic claims did not reflect the experiences of ordinary Ghanaians.

Despite the interruptions, President Mahama continued, emphasizing that the employment and poverty reduction data indicate a growing resilience in Ghana’s economy and a shift from planning to tangible action.
