A member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has petitioned the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to investigate and sanction Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, accusing the former Assin Central MP of misconduct for remarks she says undermine party unity ahead of the 2028 polls.
In a petition dated 22 June and submitted to the NEC Chairman, Mona Gertrude Effah, Esq, a former parliamentary candidate for Wassa East, alleged Agyapong breached Article 3(4)(1) of the NPP Constitution during a 18 June interview on NET 2 TV.
“Disparaging” statements
Effah said Agyapong, a former presidential aspirant for the 2024 and 2028 elections, made statements “with the intention to thwart the electoral fortunes of the Party” in the 2028 General Election.
She described the comments as “disparaging of the Party” and said they had “the clear tendency to foster disunity within its ranks.”
The petitioner argued the remarks were witnessed by the public via NET 2 TV, social media and online platforms, amplifying their “prejudicial effects on the Party’s public standing.”
She said the conduct brought the party into disrepute, created disaffection among members, undermined unity and discipline, and prejudiced the party’s electoral image.
Breach of party constitution
Effah said Agyapong’s actions violated Article 3, Clause 4(1) sub-clauses (a), (b), (c) and (d), which require members to “promote and defend the good name of the Party; protect the unity of the Party; be loyal and truthful to the Party; abide by and publicly uphold the decisions of the Party.”
She cited his seniority and profile, noting a former presidential aspirant speaking on national TV carries “materially greater potential to mislead the public as to the Party’s internal state” and could be relied on by political opponents.
Effah also referenced a September 2023 TV interview where Agyapong alleged he was offered money to step out of the presidential race, an allegation she said was “vehemently denied by the accused camp.”
Relief sought
The petitioner is requesting the disciplinary body to investigate the allegations, invite Agyapong to answer them, make findings on breaches of the constitution, impose sanctions deemed appropriate, and grant any other relief to preserve party unity, discipline and integrity.
The petition, copied to the General Secretary and National Council, comes after NPP Director of Communications Richard Ahiagbah warned that “if your utterances or behaviors threaten the party’s unity, it’s better we part ways with you.”
Ahiagbah said the NPP is bigger than any individual or factional interest.
NPP leadership has said all petitions will be reviewed per the party constitution.
