The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has reaffirmed that all lands belonging to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are vested in the Golden Stool, not in families or individuals. He stressed that chiefs are only caretakers and warned against attempts to claim ownership of the university’s lands.
Speaking at the launch of KNUST’s 75th Anniversary celebrations on June 24, 2026, Otumfuo cautioned that anyone pursuing ownership claims or supporting such cases in court does so at their own risk. He noted that some individuals, including those within the university community, have colluded to secure judgments over portions of KNUST land for personal gain.
“The land belongs to the Golden Stool. The chiefs are caretakers; no family owns the land,” Otumfuo declared.
He criticized lawyers who take up such cases, urging them to exercise professional responsibility before pursuing claims involving lands reserved for educational institutions.
KNUST, established in 1952, has faced recurring challenges of land encroachment and litigation, a problem common to several educational institutions in Ghana. The Asantehene’s intervention underscores the importance of protecting the university’s assets and preserving them for academic purposes.
