“SEDINA TAMAKLOE’S ACQUITTAL WAS POLITICALLY MOTIVATED” – HENRY NANA BOAKYE

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedina Christine Tamakloe-Attionu, describing the ruling as politically motivated and orchestrated to overturn corruption-related convictions involving officials of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

At a press conference in Accra, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) argued that the acquittal was not based on the merits of the case but was “procured, packaged and well delivered.” He maintained that the High Court conviction, delivered by Justice Afia Serwah Asare Botwe, was supported by overwhelming documentary evidence, forensic audits, and sworn testimony.

Sedina Christine Tamakloe-Attionu was convicted in absentia in 2024 after fleeing Ghana during her trial. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison for offences including stealing, conspiracy to steal, wilfully causing financial loss to the state, money laundering, and breaches of the Public Procurement Act. Nana B questioned how her conviction was overturned within seven weeks of her extradition to Ghana, calling the timeline suspicious.

“On what principle of law does a mountain of evidence become a mirage?” he asked, insisting that the acquittal undermines Ghana’s fight against corruption.

The NPP also dismissed Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine’s indication that the state would appeal to the Supreme Court, claiming it was part of a “well-choreographed plan” to shield politically connected individuals.

The ruling has reignited debate over judicial independence and accountability in Ghana. Supporters of the NPP argue that the acquittal erodes public trust in the justice system, while critics of the party say its accusations risk politicising the judiciary further.
