Viral video: KNUST assistant headmaster must be jailed, barred from teaching – FIDA Ghana

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Ghana has demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of embattled assistant head of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Senior High School, Charles Akwasi Aidoo.

This comes after a video surfaced allegedly showing misconduct that the group described as a serious breach of professional ethics and safeguarding obligations.

In a statement on Friday, FIDA said teachers held positions of trust and bore a duty of care toward students, adding that the actions captured in the video represented “a betrayal of this responsibility and are wholly unacceptable.”

The women’s lawyers’ group said the individual should not only be dismissed from the teaching service but also permanently barred from employment in any private or public school.

FIDA noted assurances from the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, who has pledged to work with police to ensure swift arrest. The group called on the Criminal Investigations Department to “take immediate steps to arrest and prosecute the offender without delay.”

The statement urged the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES) and law enforcement agencies to ensure a transparent and thorough investigation. “Anything short of decisive accountability will undermine public confidence and further endanger the welfare of students,” it said.

The group recalled the Safe Schools Initiative introduced by GES in 2018, saying the incident highlighted the urgent need to fully enforce the framework to protect students.

“Every child deserves to feel safe in school. Leadership at every level must demonstrate zero tolerance for abuse,” said Susan Aryeetey, acting executive director of FIDA Ghana.
