The Ghana Immigration Service has condemned a violent attack on two of its officers at the Gbintiri Inland Checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region, which left one officer dead and another in critical condition.

The incident occurred around 1 am on October 3, 2025, when armed assailants opened fire on the officers who were on duty at the checkpoint. Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICO II) Rafiq Mohammad was killed in the attack, while his colleague, AICO II Oppong Daniel, sustained severe gunshot wounds. Daniel is currently receiving treatment in critical condition at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.

Security agencies, including a joint team from the Police Service and Immigration Service in the region, quickly moved to the scene to ensure the safety of the surviving officer and launched an investigation into the attack.

The Comptroller General of Immigration extended condolences to the family of the fallen officer, describing his death as the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The Service has vowed to pursue those behind the attack and ensure they face justice.

“The Ghana Immigration Service remains steadfast in safeguarding Ghana’s territorial integrity,” the statement said, stressing that national security requires continued collaboration with citizens.

The Service also assured the public of its unwavering commitment to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of what it described as a heinous crime.
