Dangote Refinery Expansion Set to Transform West Africa’s Fuel Market

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has announced a major expansion of its refining capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day — a development expected to reshape Nigeria’s downstream petroleum landscape and regional supply dynamics.

The announcement was made in Lagos on Sunday, October 26, 2025, during a world press conference attended by key figures including Chairman of FBN Holdings Plc, Femi Otedola; Executive Director of Operations, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, Mariya Aliko Dangote; President and CEO of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote; Group Executive Director of Commercial Operations, Fatima Aliko Dangote; and Vice President of Oil & Gas, Devakumar Edwin.

Industry analysts say the expanded capacity significantly reduces the need for large-scale petroleum imports into Nigeria while potentially minimizing excess tankage utilization across the country. The shift is also expected to trigger wider market realignments in West Africa’s midstream sector.

Observers note that neighboring Ghana could emerge as a strategic redistribution and storage hub as regional fuel flows evolve under the new supply realities.

Wingfield Group has already signaled readiness to explore new partnerships and joint ventures that align with the changing market structure.
