NRSA’s Ban on Toyota Voxy Could Lead to More Unemployment- Kennedy Osei Nyarko

Kennedy Osei Nyarko, Member of Parliament (MP) for Akim Swedru, has voiced strong opposition to the recent decision by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to ban the use of Toyota Voxy vehicles for commercial purposes.

According to Nyarko, while the safety of passengers on Ghana’s roads is crucial, the NRSA’s directive is too harsh and could lead to further job losses in the country.

In a post on his official Facebook page, Nyarko expressed concern that such a ban could worsen unemployment, especially among drivers and businesses reliant on the Toyota Voxy for commercial transportation. The MP suggested that instead of an outright ban, the NRSA could consider limiting the distance these vehicles are allowed to travel for commercial purposes—proposing a maximum limit of 20 kilometers.

Nyarko emphasized that the government should be cautious about taking extreme actions that could impact the livelihoods of hardworking Ghanaians. He highlighted that while Okada (motorcycle taxis) operations have been debated for legalization, restricting vehicles like the Toyota Voxy for commercial use would be counterproductive, especially when considering the wider context of the country’s unemployment challenges.

“I urge the NRSA to reconsider their decision and implement a more balanced solution that includes operational guidelines for these vehicles,” Nyarko stated. “A more measured approach will ensure both road safety and job preservation.”
