Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has extended a goodwill message to Ghana’s Black Stars ahead of their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada.
Ghana begin their campaign on Wednesday against Panama in Toronto, marking their first appearance at the global tournament.
In his message, Bawumia highlighted football’s unifying role in Ghanaian society and beyond.
“Football has always been a part of us as a nation, it has always united us, and it brings the world together,” he said.
“As the Black Stars start their journey at the 2026 World Cup, I want to wish them the very best.”
He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to compete at the highest level and urged the players to draw inspiration from past performances on the world stage.
“Black Stars, you have done it before and you can do it again,” he said. “The nation is behind you, and I am also behind you. Go Black Stars and go for gold.”
The message adds to a growing chorus of support from political leaders, sports fans and the wider Ghanaian public as the team prepares for its opening Group match.
Ghana will be targeting a strong start against Panama as they seek progression from the group stage and a deep run in the tournament.
