Wontumi wins defamation case at the Supreme Court – Report

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has won the defamation suit brought against him by Ghana’s Special Envoy for Reparations, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, at the Supreme Court.

Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, originally sued Wontumi in 2022 at the High Court in Kumasi, seeking $10 million against Wontumi and his media house, Wontumi TV/Radio, for allegedly defaming him.

The now Special Envoy for Reparations said that Wontumi and his media house defamed him by calling him a “thief” ahead of the 2020 general elections.

The Kumasi High Court reportedly threw out the case, saying that it lacked merit and slapped the former minister with a cost of GH¢150,000.

According to a report by The Law Platform, the Supreme Court heard an appeal on the matter on November 12, 2025.

The apex court of the land, by a unanimous decision, dismissed the appeal filed by Ekwow Spio-Garbrah.

A post shared by the media outlet indicated that the Acting Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, chaired the five-member panel of the Supreme Court that heard the matter.

The other justices are Justice Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu, Justice Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi, Justice Ernest Gaewu, and Justice Henry Anthony Kwofie.

Ekwow Spio-Garbrah indicated that Wontumi, during a discussion on his Wontumi TV and radio stations, defamed him by calling him a thief.

“All that Inusah Fuseini is saying is that even he, Inusah Fuseini, is a thief. If you mention Spio-Garbrah’s name, he is a thief, Sylvester Mensah is a thief, Joshua Alabi is a thief, all their presidential candidates are thieves, so if John Mahama is a thief, then let us allow him to continue stealing,” he quoted Wontumi in his writ.

However, Chairman Wontumi, in his written response to the suit, argued that he meant no malice but was only interpreting the statement made by Inusah Fuseini.
