‘We have marked them; they will meet us in the hospitals’ – GRNMA Secretary threatens journalists

Dr David Tenkorang-Twum, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has stated that journalists who criticise nurses unfairly will “meet them in the hospitals.”

According to him, the intention is not to cause harm but rather to prove to such journalists that nurses and midwives are professionals in their field.

Speaking in an interview on Neat FM, which has since circulated widely on social media, Dr Tenkorang-Twum said, “Those journalists, we have marked them. They will come and meet us in the hospital; I am serious about this. I said they will come and meet us in the hospital and we will show them that we are professionals.

“They are in their offices saying all sorts of things they want, but when they come to us, we will prove to them in our consulting rooms that we are professionals. Not that we will do them evil but we will demonstrate that we are professionals. The nonsense they do on radio, we won’t do the same, we will show them professionalism.”

His comments come in the wake of a misunderstanding he had with the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, following an alleged assault on a nurse at the Ridge Hospital in Accra.

Dr Tenkorang-Twum had criticised the health minister, remarks that some observers considered unfair.

His position also attracted criticisms from sections of the media, with some journalists accusing him and other nurses of unprofessional conduct.

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) has called on Dr Tenkorang-Twum to apologise for what they described as a “disrespectful comment.”

The demand follows a remark in which Dr Tenkorang-Twum reportedly described the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, as a “farmer,” a comment GNAFF considers unacceptable.

In a statement issued on Friday, August 22, 2025, the association strongly condemned the remarks.

“GNAFF hereby serves notice to Dr David Tenkorang-Twum to, within 24 hours, retract his unfortunate remarks and render an unqualified apology to all farmers and fishermen across Ghana. Anything short of this will compel GNAFF to consider the appropriate steps necessary to defend the dignity and integrity of our hardworking members,” the statement said.

The association further appealed to Ghanaians to respect the sacrifices and contributions of farmers and fishermen, who they described as vital to national development.

“Farmers and fishermen have long been the backbone of Ghana’s economy, contributing immensely to the nation’s growth, food security and economic survival.

“It is highly disheartening and unacceptable for such a venerable group to be subjected to public ridicule in this manner,” GNAFF added.
