Some persons claiming to be from the National Security have vandalised the University of Ghana (UG)’s Livestock and Poultry Research Centre at Borteyman.

Following the incident, which occurred on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, and the National Security Director of Special Operations, Richard Jakpa, yesterday visited the site to assess the damage and ascertain the facts.

Prof. Amfo, speaking with the media, said the university received reports about the alleged invasion and acts of vandalism by persons claiming to be from National Security, and therefore had to visit the site to get firsthand information on what transpired.

“We have come to the site to see what actually happened yesterday. There were reported acts of vandalism here yesterday. So we have come here, as you can see, together with National Security, to come to the bottom of this,” she stated.

Prof. Amfo emphasised that the university is the legitimate owner of the land, and will use all lawful means to protect it.

She explained that the site has been designated for the construction of staff accommodation, and urged for continued peaceful cooperation among stakeholders.

“The University of Ghana is the bonafide owner of this land, and we will work together with the National Security and the government to ensure that we have a peaceful occupation of this land.

“As you can see, we are in the process of starting the construction of 208 apartments for staff accommodation, and it is important that we continue to have peaceful ownership of this land,” she added.

Warning

Meanwhile, the National Security Secretariat has cautioned individuals against using its name or resources to engage in criminal activities.

Director of Special Operations at the Secretariat, Richard Jakpa, confirmed that some individuals posing as operatives have already been arrested and prosecuted.

He assured that a full investigation is underway to uncover those behind the latest incident which occurred at the UG Livestock and Poultry Research Centre at Borteyman.

“There are a lot of people who roam around claiming to be coming from National Security, doing all manner of things. We’ve been arresting them. We’ve been prosecuting them. So, National Security is doing everything possible to protect the image of the institution and also the interests of the nation and our assets,” he said.

Mr. Jakpa stressed that the Secretariat will not tolerate unauthorised persons parading as operatives.

“Well, for them, all those who are roaming around claiming to be National Security without authorisation and then certification we all have our ID cards and other things. I just want them to understand that we are coming for them,” he warned.
