Alfred Tuah-Yeboah: Sedina Tamakloe must go straight to prison upon return

Former Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah says former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe should be sent directly to prison upon her return to Ghana following her extradition from the United States.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (13 April), Tuah-Yeboah outlined the legal journey that led to the extradition process, explaining that Tamakloe was convicted in absentia by an Accra High Court in 2024 after leaving Ghana under the pretext of seeking medical care and failing to return.

He said the state subsequently initiated extradition proceedings, beginning with securing a warrant locally before forwarding authenticated court documents through diplomatic channels to US authorities.

According to him, Ghana meticulously followed all legal requirements under its longstanding extradition treaty with the United States, including engaging INTERPOL and ensuring all documentation met international standards.

“With the US court having completed its processes, the expectation is clear—once she arrives in Ghana, she must be arrested and committed to prison to begin serving her sentence,” he said.

On the question of fairness, Tuah-Yeboah defended the trial in absentia, arguing that Tamakloe had initially participated in proceedings and was represented by counsel before choosing not to return.

He dismissed any potential legal challenge to the conviction, insisting that due process was followed at every stage.

He also argued strongly against the possibility of bail, noting that Tamakloe had previously been granted bail but absconded.

“An accused person who jumps bail is not entitled to bail again. I will be surprised if any court grants her bail,” he stated.

While acknowledging that the Constitution allows for presidential clemency under Article 72, Tuah-Yeboah cautioned against its use in this case, warning it could undermine Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts.

He further stressed that justice would only be fully served when Tamakloe is physically returned to Ghana and begins serving her 10-year sentence.
