Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has defended his remarks regarding the tragic stampede that occurred during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) 2025/2026 recruitment screening at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Nitiwul clarified that his comments were not insensitive, contrary to criticism from some quarters.

He explained that he was simply expressing gratitude that such an incident did not occur during his tenure as Defence Minister.

“My comment in Parliament on the GAF recruitment stampede was that I want to thank God that He protected me and some of these unfortunate things did not happen when I was minister. My condolences to the departed souls, and government should do well to take care of the injured persons. I don’t think there is anything wrong with my comment,” he said.

The stampede, which took place on November 12, 2025, resulted in the deaths of six prospective recruits and left 22 others injured during the overcrowded screening exercise.

Nitiwul extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and urged the government to prioritize support for the injured.
