Pressure is mounting on former presidential aspirant and ex-Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong after a second pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) group petitioned the party’s leadership to take disciplinary action against him over a series of public remarks critical of the party and its leaders.
The latest petition, submitted by the Central Regional Patriotic Movement, calls on the NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to immediately expel Agyapong from the party, accusing him of making sustained public attacks that undermine party unity and electoral prospects.
The group cited comments by Agyapong on the stalled Afari Military Hospital project, criticism of former vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s concession speech following the NPP’s 2024 election defeat, and remarks alleging neglect of grassroots supporters by the party leadership.
It also referenced Agyapong’s warning that he could “spill the beans” if provoked, as well as a public confrontation with Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe Abronye during the NPP’s Thank You Tour in 2025.
“We demand the NEC immediately remove Hon. Kennedy Agyapong from the NPP,” the petition said, further urging the party to issue a public statement confirming his removal and cautioning members against similar conduct.
The petition marks the second known call by party activists for disciplinary measures against Agyapong.
Earlier, a former member of the NPP’s student wing, TESCON, petitioned the party’s National Disciplinary Committee over comments made by Agyapong during an interview in which he sharply criticised the party’s leadership and internal management.
That petition argued that Agyapong’s statements violated provisions of the NPP constitution requiring members to uphold party unity and avoid conduct that could bring the party into disrepute.
The fresh demands come amid growing tensions within the opposition party as it seeks to rebuild after losing power in the 2024 general election.
Agyapong, who was unsuccessful in the NPP’s presidential primaries, has increasingly voiced frustration with the party’s direction and handling of internal affairs, drawing both support and criticism from party members.
His recent comments on the Afari Military Hospital project sparked a public rebuttal from senior NPP figures, including Effiduase-Asokore MP Nana Ayew Afriye, who accused him of making inaccurate claims about parliamentary oversight of the project.
