Democracy must go beyond elections – Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh on Constitution Day

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections, has called on Ghanaians to renew their collective commitment to the ideals of democracy, justice, and strong institutions as the nation marks Constitution Day.

In a message commemorating the anniversary, Dr Opoku Prempeh reflected on the significance of the 1992 Constitution, describing it as both a legal document and a national covenant that has sustained Ghana’s Fourth Republic for over three decades while providing a stable framework for governance.

He stressed that safeguarding the Republic requires a continuous recommitment to democratic values, particularly at a time when the Constitution is undergoing a critical review process following the work and recommendations of the Constitution Review Committee.

According to him, the rule of law must remain supreme over political power, institutions must be stronger than individuals, and justice must serve all citizens rather than a privileged few.

Dr Opoku Prempeh noted that 33 years into the Fourth Republic, Ghana’s democratic journey remains unfinished.

He argued that democracy must evolve beyond the conduct of periodic elections and be firmly anchored in integrity, dignity, accountability, and resilient institutions that transcend political cycles.

“For the sake of the Republic, we must continue building a just society that protects rights, rewards merit, and creates opportunities for every citizen to pursue their aspirations with dignity and hope,” he said.

He concluded by invoking blessings for the nation, expressing hope for a stronger and greater Ghana as citizens collectively work to deepen democratic governance.

Ghana marks Constitution Day annually to commemorate the coming into force of the 1992 Constitution, which ushered in the Fourth Republic.
