Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has criticised the latest increase in electricity and water tariffs, describing it as insensitive to the economic challenges facing Ghanaians.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 1, 2026, Republic Day, Mr Awuku said it was ironic that a day meant to symbolise freedom and self-determination had been marked by what he described as the fifth utility tariff increase under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government within 18 months.
“Today is 1st July 2026, our Republic Day—a day that symbolises our nation’s freedom, resilience and self-determination. Yet today, instead of giving Ghanaians something to celebrate, we have been greeted with yet another increase in utility tariffs,” he stated.
According to him, the new adjustment raises electricity tariffs by 3.49% and water tariffs by 0.85%, effective July 1.
Mr Awuku listed four previous increases since the NDC assumed office, including a 14.75% increase in electricity and 4.02% in water in May 2025; a 2.45% electricity increase in July 2025; a 1.14% increase in October 2025; and a 9.86% electricity increase alongside a 15.92% water increase in January 2026.
He questioned the government’s economic narrative, noting that while officials highlight lower inflation and a stronger cedi, ordinary households continue to face rising utility bills.
“If the economy is doing so well, why are the bills of ordinary Ghanaians getting heavier with almost every tariff review? The market woman does not pay her bills with inflation figures. The barber does not pay his ECG bill with exchange rate statistics,” he said.
“Ghanaians were promised relief. What they are experiencing instead is one increase after another. Enough is enough,” the Akuapem North MP stated.
