The building of the Jubilee House: The headache of the NDCs

Jubilee House is the official presidential palace and seat of government of Ghana located in Accra. It serves as both the official residence and office of the President of Ghana, and has a rich history tied to the country’s political development since independence.

Prior to the building of the Jubilee house, the Office of the president used to be at Osu Castle, an office left by the colonial masters Post-Independence and served as place for government business. The office in the castle was known as “The Flagstaff House”.

Between 2007 and 2008, the government of President John Agyekum Kufuor undertook a crucial decision to move the office of the president from a building that shared horrific history of slavery to a more confined space. The project was partly financed by a loan and support from the Government of India.

The then opposition party, the NDC, led by John Evans Atta-Mills and Mahama opposed this development and criticized the NPP government of Kuffuor.

The complex was completed and officially commissioned in November 2008 and named the “Golden Jubilee House” to mark Ghana’s 50th anniversary of independence (Ghana@50).

Even though J.A Kuffuor put up this building, he never gets to live in it following the end of his tenure as president. Neither did the main opposition leader, Atta Mills.

However, in 2009 under Atta-Mills government, the name was reversed to “Flagstaff House”, the very colonial inherited name Ghana was trying to avoid, upon the death of Prez. Atta-Mills, his successor John Dramani Mahama took over the “Flagstaff House” and was the first president to inhabit it as the official residence of the president.

One thing about the NDCs is that they are naturally good at renaming institutions and reversing policies they never initiated, but tends to be the major beneficiaries of another man’s labor.

In March 2018, The name was later reversed back to “Jubilee House” under Nana Addo’s government and has since remained unchanged.

Jubilee House now functions as the central hub of Ghana’s executive branch, hosting presidential offices, state functions, meetings with foreign dignitaries, and other official events.

The New Patriotic Party thrives on 3 core pillars:
1. Development in Freedom!
2. Prosperity for All!
3. Stable Democracy!

This is who we are!
We love Development!
We are the New Patriotic Party
