Police rescue Kwahu queen mother

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has directed the immediate release of the Queen Mother of Kwahu, Nana Adwoa Gyamfua III, following a dawn operation that led to her arrest.

In a statement, the Ghana Police Service said the IGP has also tasked the Police Professional Standards Bureau to investigate the circumstances surrounding the operation. The statement added that any officers found culpable will face sanctions.

The queen mother was arrested after heavily armed police personnel stormed her residence at the Abene palace amid indiscriminate gunfire around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, November 17, 2025.

Although the exact motive for the raid is still unclear, the Kwahu Paramount Chief, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III, disclosed that several individuals were taken into custody.

It was only after they had been transported from the palace that the absence of the queen mother was detected, raising concerns of a possible abduction.

Meanwhile, security has been strengthened in and around Kwahu to ensure the safety of residents and maintain calm in the area.
