The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced the temporary shutdown of the Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations following severe flooding caused by heavy rains in parts of the Greater Accra Region.
The two power utilities said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to protect lives, critical electricity infrastructure and operational personnel after floodwaters affected key installations.
In a joint statement issued on Monday, GRIDCo and ECG explained that the flooding had created significant safety risks, making it necessary to suspend power supply from the affected facilities.
“As a precautionary measure and in the interest of public safety, it has become necessary to temporarily shut down power supply from the affected facilities,” the statement said.
According to the utilities, the flooding has impacted critical infrastructure at several substations, posing a threat to both electrical equipment and personnel working on the network.
“The precautionary shutdown became necessary because the flooding has affected critical power infrastructure at a number of substations, posing significant risks to both electrical equipment and operational personnel,” the statement noted.
GRIDCo and ECG said engineers are continuously assessing the extent of the damage while closely monitoring the situation to determine when it will be safe to restore electricity supply.
The companies further warned that the persistent heavy rains could lead to additional temporary outages in other flood-affected communities if safety concerns arise.
“As the heavy rains and flooding persist, the public is advised that power supply may be temporarily interrupted in other affected areas, where necessary, as a precautionary measure to protect lives, property, and critical electricity infrastructure whenever safety risks are identified,” the statement added.
The utilities also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report electricity-related hazards, including fallen poles, exposed or fallen power lines, and flooded electrical installations, through the nearest ECG office or the company’s customer service channels.
GRIDCo and ECG apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused by the outages and assured the public that every effort would be made to restore electricity supply once weather conditions improve and it is safe to do so.
“Every effort will be made to restore power supply as soon as weather conditions improve and it is safe to do so,” the statement noted.
